Key Advantages and Features

Up to 450 J

RKP 450 – Pendulum Impact Testers up to 450 Joules

  • The basic unit consists of a vibration-damping steel casting, providing a high level of mechanical stiffness and ensuring reliable test results.
  • Operation is fast and convenient, with easy specimen insertion and pendulum release. This is particularly important for tests to ISO 148 and ASTM E 23 with temperature-conditioned specimens, as they must be impacted 5 seconds after removal from the temperature conditioning area.
  • Operation is further simplified by quick changing of Charpy fixtures and pendulums, coupled with straightforward access for maintenance, servicing and calibration plus easy removal of specimen remains.
  • testXpert III provides access to powerful software packages for all commonly used standards plus instrumented and non-instrumented tests.
  • ZwickRoell pendulum impact testers in the RKP 450 range satisfy the requirements of EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and of EN ISO 12100 and EN ISO 13849-1/2. This also means that the failure of an individual safety control element will not result in the loss of overall instrument safety.
  • RKP 450 pendulum impact testers therefore provide maximum protection for operator and instrument. An officially (TÜV) certified safety control system with redundant micro-controllers monitors the entire safety set-up.
  • The electronics include a high-resolution angular encoder for precise measurement of the angle of rise. An RS232 interface is available for connection to laboratory data management systems with plug and play PC connection via a USB port.
  • A special version allows temperature-conditioned wedge-impact tests to be performed in a temperature range from -45°C to +85°C.

  • testXpert III provides access to powerful software packages for all commonly used standards, instrumented and non-instrumented tests.
  • The PSW 750 satisfies all necessary safety requirements such as DIN 51333 and EN ISO 13489, plus additional European standards coming into force in 2009, providing maximum protection for operator and instrument.
  • PSW 750 pendulum impact testers therefore provide maximum protection for operator and instrument. An officially (TÜV) certified safety control system with redundant micro-controllers monitors the entire safety set-up.
  • The electronics include a high-resolution angular encoder for precise measurement of the angle of rise. An RS232 interface is available for connection to laboratory data management systems. A PC can be connected via a USB plug-and-play interface.

Operating principle

Operating Principle of a Pendulum Impact Tester

Safety Device

Zwick pendulum impact testers in the RKP 300 / RKP 450 / PSW 750 ranges satisfy the requirements of EG Machinery Directive 2006/42/EG and of EN ISO 12100 and EN ISO 13849-1/2. This also means that the failure of an individual safety control element will not result in the loss of overall instrument safety.
The pendulum impact testers as a whole have been revised in this respect. The resulting safety device satisfies the requirements of national and international standards.

During design of the safety housing a primary consideration was ease of operation, whether during the test, during re-equipping for different specimens or types of test, or during maintenance and calibration. Centrally located controls, which (with the exception of simple visual confirmation of the function selected) also indicate operating errors, make working with these pendulum impact testers safe, simple and fast.

Front door, side door and housing recess enable:

  • easy specimen insertion
  • fast fixture and pendulum changes
  • easy access for maintenance, inspection and calibration
  • straightforward removal of specimen remains.

Safety and standards

The pendulum impact tester conforms to the following safety requirements: EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, EN ISO 12100 and EN ISO 13849-1/2.

The pendulum impact tester can be used for tests to the following standards: ISO 148-1, ISO 14556, DIN 50115, ASTM E23, BS131-1, ZF 15-53, ISO 11343, JIS Z 2242, GOST 9454-78.

  • Indirect calibration:
  • as per ASTM E23 with NIST specimens in energy ranges low (14 to 20 J) and high (88 to 136 J); super high is not currently available from NIST.
  • as per ISO 148-2 with ERM or ZRM specimens in ranges low (< 20 J), medium (30 to 110 J), high (110 to 220 J) and very high (> 220 J) energy.

Materials Testing on Radioactive Materials ("Hot Cell")

The safe operation of nuclear power plants and nuclear repositories is a key research topic all over the world. In order to ensure a high degree of safety, the materials used and real-world conditions, in this case with radioactivity, must be tested. ZwickRoell has supplied a tensile testing machine and a pendulum impact tester for an international research project.
